ST MARY'S CITY, MD (AP) -- St. Mary's College of Maryland has picked a literature professor and administrator from Hamilton College in upstate New York to be the school's new president.
St. Mary's College of Maryland announced Monday that 54-year-old Joseph Urgo will replace Larry Vote, who has served as acting president at the southern Maryland school since Maggie O'Brien left the job last summer. Urgo will start July 1.
Molly Mahoney, a board of trustees member who chaired the search committee, says Urgo understands the school and shares a respect for the mission of a public liberal arts institution.
Mahoney was also impressed by Urgo's commitment to environmental sustainability, which she says is a passion of many students and faculty members.
