SYRACUSE --
The snow falling Thursday night isn't the typical light and fluffy lake effect snow many are used to. It's wet and heavy, and that's where the problem is. The snow has been accumulating for hours on tree branches, which can snap easily and hit power lines.
It's what National Grid worries about in the fall as leaves get wet and weigh down on branches. The company is still restoring power to the Albany area after a snowstorm earlier this week. Syracuse city officials say crews will be on standby if massive power outages occur.
"I would say hunker down and wait and see. National Grid will restore the power within a few hours in most cases. Other than major big storms, we haven't had very lengthy outages," says Deputy Mayor John Cowin.
As of the early evening, National Grid wasn't reporting any power outages, but it expects them to pick up as temperatures drop and wind picks up. On Thursday, they started going through the city to sweep snow off branches to prevent any further damage.
