SYRACUSE -- Traffic was heavy Monday night on the detour routes around the Rt. 81 north closure. Lots of cars tried to make their way through the city streets mainly on North Salina Street and North State Street. Traffic was backed up into the downtown area.
Gene Cilento with the NYSDOT said, "That first rush hour after the closure is always the toughest. After tonight, locals will find their way around it and hopefully it won't be as bad in the next few weeks."
DOT officials estimate about 50,000 people travel north on the closed stretch of route 81 every day and getting those people re-routed is going to cause some delays.
DOT officials met with the city to discuss a plan for demolishing the building and reopening Rt 81. They were not able to make any definitive plans because they are not sure if they can legally go on the property.
