SYRACUSE -- A Central New York doctor is back from Haiti, after spending a week helping victims of the January earthquake.
Tim McCall, MD, an anesthesiologist at Crouse Hospital, spent the first week in February helping the relief efforts in the earthquake-ravaged country. He was helping to care for patients who were injured in the massive quake, specifically assisting with surgeries at Sacre Coeur Hospital, which is located in a village 80 miles north of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
Dr. McCall said he had never been a situation that was "so dire and devastating" and that it was "Overwhelming at first to be in the middle of such a medical catastrophe. He says he didn't know what to expect until he actually arrived, saying “It was very overwhelming. A lot of injuries, a lot of chaos, really sick patients with amputations and big open wounds and paralyzed.”
McCall spoke about his experiences in Haiti Wednesday morning before Crouse Hospital employees and members of the medical staff. He says he returned to Syracuse feeling like there was so much more to do, and he would like to go back to help in the future.
