SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Police have arrested a man in connection with an attempted armed robbery at a drug store last night. Here is the news release from Syracuse Police:
The Syracuse Police Department responded to an attempted armed robbery complaint last night at 8:50 PM at the Rite-Aid located at 1405 East Genesee Street. The suspect was gone upon police arrival, but the clerk and video surveillance provided a good description of the incident and the suspect. The suspect’s actions indicated that he had a gun and he threatened to shoot the clerk. When the clerk screamed for help, the suspect fled the store. The officers on scene obtained a description of the suspect and notified the 911 center which disseminated the information.
About 2:50 AM this morning, Sgt. Ralph Bowering was on patrol in the area of East Fayette St. at Westmoreland Avenue when he observed and stopped a person meeting the description of the suspect. The person was later identified as William Hardy, age 51, of 5860 Thompson Rd. in Dewitt. The investigation revealed Hardy was the suspect in the armed robbery.
Hardy was subsequently charged with attempted robbery in the second degree, a class “D” felony, and menacing in the second degree, a class “A” misdemeanor. Hardy was lodged in the Justice Center and is scheduled to be arraigned this morning.
The Criminal Investigation Division is continuing to investigate the incident.
