Driver charged with DWI after crash involving infant

CLAY -- Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a crash which took place Sunday night along Oswego Road in the Town of Clay. Sheriff's Deputies tell us it was a head-on collision, and four people were sent to the hospital to be treated, including an infant who was in one of the cars.

Here is a news release from the Sheriff's Department with new information on the crash:

Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reported that a Clay man is listed in critical condition after a two-car accident that occurred on Oswego Road in the Town of Clay last evening.

Last evening, at approximately 10:05 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Oswego Road near Calder Court, in the Town of Clay, regarding a two-car accident.  Deputy Costello reported that a 2000 Nissan Altima was traveling northbound when it crossed over in to the southbound lane of Oswego Road and collided in to a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro, operated by Darlene Halstead of 1342 County Route 22, Oswego, NY. Halsted received minor injuries as a result of the accident and was transported by ambulance to Crouse Hospital.

The driver of the Nissan Altima, Jorge Palmero, age 27, of 7092 Ourted's Circle, Liverpool, NY, received serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to University Hospital.  He is currently listed in critical condition.

Palmero’s front seat passenger, Jamie Finnegan, age 21, of 8592 Woodsboro Drive, Baldwinsville, NY, received injury to her right arm and was transported by ambulance to University Hospital.  Finnegan and Palmero’s one-month-old daughter was slightly injured and was also transported by ambulance to University Hospital.

Palmero was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle in the 3rd degree, Failure to stay in lane, not wearing a Seatbelt, Driving While Intoxicated with a child less than 15 years of age, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

The Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit will be continuing with their investigation and will determine if Palmero will be arrested on additional charges.
