Signed highways offer scenery and more
Around the country, there are 150 roadways designated scenic byways, and they offer more than quick transportation: unlike interstates, scenic highways are 'signed' for their scenic, natural, historic, cultural and/or recreational assets. The group that oversees them, the National Scenic Byway Foundation, has just gotten over $41 million in federal highway funding, and Teresa Mitchell who chairs the group and is also the president of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, says the drives offer both rural and urban attractions.
Many people use specific destinations on the roadways, but there are also tourists who drive the whole length of a road.
