ALBANY (AP) -- The state Tax Department says 13 people were charged with failing to report nearly $11 million in income, in an ongoing crackdown on tax evaders.
The latest arrests include a surgeon, two certified public accountants, a stockbroker, an attorney and two tax preparers. They face felony charges in separate cases for failing to file state personal income tax returns.
The arrests announced Wednesday raise the total to 71 persons charged in what officials call an unprecedented statewide crackdown on tax fraud and evasion.
Tax officials hope that by publicizing arrests of tax cheats, they'll increase voluntary compliance with tax laws.
