SHERRILL, ONEIDA CO. -- The chief of the Sherrill Police Department is back on the job after spending time on administrative leave.
Chief James Hastings was placed on indefinite administrative leave two weeks ago, after an initial two-week paid leave in late March, after his six-year-old grandson was found to have overdosed on methamphetamine. The incident occurred while the child was apparently in Hastings’ care. Police say it is still not clear how the child got the drugs. State Police and Oneida County Child Protective Services continue their investigation of the case.
A statement posted Wednesday on the city’s website from City Manager Bob Comis says “The City of Sherrill has concluded its review of the situation involving Chief Hastings family. All parties that were involved in this review were fully cooperative. Based on our review of the facts available the City has decided to return the Chief to full duty immediately. All further activity if any is required to be conducted confidentially. The City appreciates those citizens that have expressed their respective views regarding this matter.”
CNY Central has placed calls to Comis and State Police investigators for further comment on this story.
