EVANS MILLS, JEFFERSON CO. (AP) -- Authorities say more than 80 cows have been killed in a barn fire at a northern New York dairy farm.

Fire officials in Jefferson County say the blaze broke out around 10:00 p.m. Thursday in a barn at Young Farms in Evans Mills, just outside Fort Drum, 75 miles north of Syracuse.

Officials say 70 cows and another 15 to 20 yearlings, animals one to two years old, were killed in the fire.

The barn was destroyed. An adjacent milking building was damaged.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire is being investigated.

It was the second major barn fire in Jefferson County this month. A fire at a dairy farm in Sackets Harbor killed more than 100 cows.
