SYRACUSE --
Hair salons in Central New York could help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf Coast. An organization called Matter of Trust collects the hair and distributes it to areas that need it.
Matter of Trust says it has collected 400,000 pounds of hair so far for the first round of the cleanup.
Basically, the hair is put into nylons, and those nylons are used as floating barriers. Hair is used because it is especially good at soaking up oil.
Several local salons say they would be interested in donating to the cause.
Joseph’s At the Carriage House is planning to donate hair. “I like the idea. I think it’s wonderful to even start to talk about it,” says owner Joseph Gorgoni.
