BALDWINSVILLE --
The Baldwinsville School District, like most districts across the state, is facing a reduction in state aid, less revenue and budget cuts. The Baldwinsville School Board recently passed a budget that would lay off 30 employees. Now the school board is hearing from students about the bond between the high school and a custodial worker in danger of losing her job - and how hard the students would fight for her.
Jan Golden has been a custodial aide in Baldwinsville for 29 years. July would be her 30th anniversary with the district. A large group students has promised to do everything they can to make sure Jan makes that anniversary. Senior Tim Spurchise produced a documentary titled "Save Jan's Job" and gave copies to the school board and Baldwinsville's Superintendent. Other students formed a facebook page supporting Jan Golden.
"It picked up very quickly. I think within a week we had a thousand members and now it's up over 1,800 members," said Alex Nagy, a student at Baker High School.
"It's awesome to know that many people actually care about one person and one cause," said fellow student Rebecca Kelly.
On Tuesday, Jan Golden said she just loves the kids and she hopes she can continue to dedicate her time to the school.
"These kids show their love," said Golden "I give it to them, I didn't ask anything in return. They did it as a favor."
Students said they were told the school board would bring Jan Golden's job up at a future meeting. Some of the students are hoping that Jan will be allowed to stay for at least one more year and qualify for her 30 year retirement.
