SYRACUSE (AP) -- One upstate New York zoo is celebrating the birth of a rare penguin, while another mourns the death of a rare leopard.
In Syracuse, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is inviting the public to help name one of its Humboldt penguin chicks, which hatched in March. The zoo is one of only a handful that are capable of raising newborn penguin chicks.
Humboldt penguins are an endangered species, and 40 live at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.
In Monroe County, the Seneca Park Zoo has announced the death of the last Amur leopard at the Seneca Park Zoo. Nikita, a 17-year-old female, was born at the St. Louis Zoo and came to the Seneca Park Zoo in 2002. She was one of the oldest Amur leopards in captivity.
The Amur leopard is the most endangered big cat in the world.
