SYRACUSE -- AAA is expecting a 5.4 percent increase in the number of people traveling over the Memorial Day weekend compared to the holiday weekend in 2009. The auto club estimates 32.1 million Americans plan to travel 50 miles or more for the holiday. That compares to 30.5 million last year.
Most of those traveling will go by car, which is expected to be up 5.8 percent over 2009. Air travel is projected to increase less than one quarter of one percent. “While the economy continues to experience uncertainty, improved economic performance from one year ago should cause more Americans to take vacations this Memorial Day holiday weekend,” said Tom Chestnut, President/CEO of AAA Western and Central New York. “The year over year increase represents a strong kick-off to the unofficial beginning of summer.”
Gas prices are expected to be stable, averaging about $3.04 in New York State.
