Washington Post sportswriter Sally Jenkins was in town on Monday to cover Stephen Strasburg’s latest start for the Syracuse Chiefs. In Jenkins’ report there are several descriptions of the ball park that could easily be construed as jabs taken at Alliance Bank Stadium, mixed in with the story of Strasburg’s night.
“The phenom stood in a bullpen surrounded by industrial light towers more suited for a prison yard. A public address announcer fought to be heard over the hoo-hooing of train whistles and the clacking of boxcars that ran along tracks just beyond the outfield fence” is one example of Jenkins writing about the stadium. Another paragraph reads “The public address announcer jabbered, "Fans, get out those scorecards; it's lucky signature time!" Winners got a $10 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods. Over the tinny loudspeaker, Waylon Jennings crooned the theme to "The Dukes of Hazzard": "Just the good ol' boys . . . never meanin' no harm." Strasburg ambled out to the mound, head down, like a reluctant boy being made to go to school.”
