Police Officer Donald Moore
Police in Rome say an off duty officer stopped what could have been mass murder at a cell phone store in New York Mills. The officer, 25 year old Donald Moore was in the store with his girlfriend when an angry customer who was carrying a hit list opened fire on a clerk. The officer fired, and killed the gunman.

The swift actions of an off-duty Rome Police Officer ended an active shooter incident shortly after 1:00 PM today. On May 27th., 2010, off-duty Rome Police Officer Donald Moore was inside of the AT&T cell phone store located on Commercial Drive in New Hartford, New York. Officer Moore and several other customers were waiting in line when a disgruntled customer entered the store, armed with a 357 caliber handgun. The disgruntled customer, identified as seventy-nine year old Utica , New York resident Abraham Dickan, then began shooting, striking one employee in the stomach. Officer Moore then drew his off-duty firearm and returned fire, striking and killing Dickan. Officer Moore then guided the remaining employees and customers into a back room where they could safely wait for police to arrive. The injured employee is identified as Seth Turk. Turk is being treated at the Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica and is listed in critical condition. Dickan was also in possession of a letter which listed the names of six employees that he intended to kill. City of Rome New York Police Chief Kevin Beach commended Officer Moore for the heroic actions Moore displayed today. "Clearly, Officer Moores willingness to act swiftly saved the lives of many". "Officer Moores courage and bravery during this incident was exemplary and I am proud to have Officer Donald Moore as a member of the Rome Police Department. Officer Moore is originally from the City of Oneida New York. He graduated from Oneida High School and also the University of Albany with a degree in psychology. Moore was appointed to the Rome Police Department on May 29th., 2007 and is assigned to the Patrol Division and is also a member of the bike patrol unit. In May, 2009, Officer Moore received a Rome Police Department P.B.A. Letter of Commendation for bravery when he climbed out onto a tree limb to rescue a young child who had been swept into the Mohawk River. Moore was honored by the American Red Cross as a "Real Hero" for this same incident.
