ITHACA -- The debate is beauty or safety.
The fences that line the half dozen bridges on Cornell University's campus detract from the scenic view the school is known for.
But the question is, do they deter people from jumping?
6 students jumped from campus bridges this past school year, prompting the university to install fences along the bridges.
But many say the fences don't deter jumpers, and only take away from the beauty of the campus.
The Ithaca Common Council thinks enough of them that last night they approved Cornell's request to keep them up for another ten weeks.
Now the university's task is to come up with a more permanent solution. Studies have shown barriers, like fences, make people think twice before jumping.
University officials say the fences won't be the permanent solution, they just don't know what will be.
In the meantime, the fences will stay while Cornell determines what the best solution is.
They say they are hard at work studying what solution will best keep students safe while still showcasing the beauty of the gorges.
They don't know if they will have a solution in place by the end of the ten week extension.
