SYRACUSE -- Jason Jessmore, head chef for Dolce Vita on East Genesee Street in Syracuse, has a simple philosophy when it comes to food: the closer to home it is grown the better.

"Locally grown food is fresh. It tastes better because it isn't coming from California and it's not shipped with as many pesticides," he says.

Dolce Vita is one of more than 100 local businesses committed to the idea of buying local.

It is estimated for every dollar spent on local food ,more than 75 cents stays in the local economy.

Dolce Vita, has created a "Local Menu," made up of food produced only in Central New York. " Every item on that menu is completely local. If it is not local we're not using it," Jessmore says.
