FORT DRUM (AP) -- A contingent of soldiers with the 10th Mountain Division has started returning to their northern New York Army post after being deployed to Iraq.
Officials at Fort Drum say nearly 100 soldiers arrived early yesterday morning at the military installation's airfield.
They're the first wave of 2nd Brigade Combat Team soldiers who will be returning to Fort Drum after spending eight months in Iraq. The unit deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in October 2009.
During their mission overseas, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team worked with Iraqi security forces and the Iraqi government to prevent and battle terrorism, boost economic development and establish a transition force.
More of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team's 3,500 soldiers will be returning at later dates.
