TOWN OF CLAY -- The plot of land across the street from Linda Caiella’s house has been empty for the 30 years she’s lived on Buckley Road, but now a developer is looking to build two office buildings on it. The land is located between Waxwood Circle and Rita Drive.
Caiella says she’s concerned about increased traffic on the already busy road. "Someone suggested maybe they'd put a traffic light, right in front of my house and for me to have to come out of my house through a traffic light is ridiculous,” says Caiella.
Caiella says she has a petition, with more than 200 signatures echoing that sentiment. Neighbors are also concerned about drainage and lighting. But being able to build is contingent on changing the zoning of the land, a decision which is ultimately up to the town board.
Town Supervisor Damian Ulatowski says there are a lot of things to weigh in this decision. "It is the owner’s right to make the maximum use of his or her property and we, as a town board, have to listen to that side of the story, but we also have to be cognizant of the residents themselves who are ultimately impacted by this.”
Buckley Road is already home to medical offices and commercial businesses. Clay’s planning board has recommended that the property be re-zoned, but the supervisor says that decision will not be made at Monday night’s meeting.
"It would be an advantage to the Town of Clay because there would be more tax revenue coming out but my question is, that's a money situation, what's more important, more money or a person's life? How do you weigh that?" asked Caiella.
CNYCentral calls to the developer, Red Barn, were not returned today.
The public meeting is Monday, June 21st at 7:30 at the Clay Town Hall at 4401 State Route 31.
