Slightly milder & much wetter than normal
SYRACUSE -- If you were asked to describe June weather-wise in one word, what would it be? In my opinion, I would choose a three letter word: WET. Do you agree? What would you say? Comment on this weather story after reading the following weather data.
During the month of June 2010, Syracuse Hancock International Airport received 6.57” of rain. That is well above the normal of 3.54”, over 3 inches, in fact. While this is certainly quite a bit of rain, it is not even close to a record. It was good enough, though, for the eighth wettest on record going back to 1903.
Here is a list of the top 10 wettest Junes since 1903:
Top 10 June Rainfall
1 • 15.92” – 1922
2 • 12.30” – 1972
3 • 7.42” – 1976
4 • 7.07” – 1973
5 • 6.70” – 1906
6 • 6.66” – 1905
7 • 6.59” – 1937
8 • 6.57” – 2010
9 • 6.14” – 1968
10 • 5.89” – 1944
Other precipitation notes from June include the following: Syracuse had 17 days where there was measurable rain. There a total of 12 days when rainfall was at least 0.10”. There were 6 days when Syracuse received at least 0.50” of rainfall. Finally, there were 2 days when the daily rainfall was 1.00” or more. Other areas received even heavier rainfall amounts. One of our weather watchers, Kathy Smith in Verona Beach, had 8.67”.
This wet month was both good and bad for agriculture. We have had many reports of farmers having too much rainfall for baling hay and for strawberry staying mold-free. In addition, some farmers were prevented from planting soybeans. However, this rainfall did help to erase a large deficit of rain from the prior months of March, April and May. This ended our potential drought worries.
Heading over to the temperatures for the month, it may surprise you that we were above average for the month without having a day with 90° or higher. The highest temperature was 89° back on June 19. The coldest temperature was 47° on June 9. The average temperature for the whole month was 67.4°, which was 1.6° above normal. The average temperature takes each daily high and low temperature and averages them together over the entire month.
After receiving all that rain, you may be happy to hear that the first weekend of July looks sunny and dry, along with above normal temperatures
