OSWEGO -- Police in Oswego want the public to be on alert after a series of car break-ins over the past few weeks.
According to the Oswego City Police Department, officers have received numerous reports of vehicles that were entered, and some that had their contents either damaged or stolen. The department reminds citizens to lock their car doors and not to leave valuable items in their vehicles.
Police say that from June 1 through June 30 they have investigated 36 reports of vehicles that have been illegally entered. Some entries have resulted in stolen items other have resulted in damaged property. In most cases the vehicles entered had been left unsecured in some fashion with either the window(s) left down or the doors unlocked.
As a result, police are reminding residents of methods to avoid becoming a victim to these types of crimes:
- Secure your vehicle by rolling up the windows and locking the doors
- Don’t leave items of value in the vehicle
Also police ask that residents be good witnesses. If you think that you may be a witness to a crime, or if you see someone who appears suspicious in your neighborhood, contact 911 as soon as possible with the information, so the police can investigate.
