(AP) -- U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says more should be done to help veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.
Gillibrand is cosponsoring legislation to embed a mental health professional with every Guard and Reserve Unit. She also is calling for better coordination between the Defense Department and the Veterans Administration and for more long-term screening.
PTSD is a potentially crippling condition that can emerge after combat. Gillibrand cites reports estimating that nearly 8,000 recent veterans from New York suffer from PTSD.
