SKANEATELES -- The Village of Skaneateles is replacing it's corroded parking meters, again. Mayor Bob Green says the corroded meters have been an ongoing problem for the village, and they've already installed brand new ones a number of times in the past 5 years. He says the meter manufacturer attributes the problem to the Northeast climate, and the combination of rain and snow, mixed with salt used to clear winter roads.
The corrosion can jam up the locks on the parking meters. The Police Chief Lloyd Perkins says that poses a problem for officers, who are trying to collect coins from the machines. Perkins says officers often have to drill the lock out in order to access that money.
The mayor says these new meters will come at no cost to the taxpayer. Green says the manufacturer will replace all 150 meters that line village streets, because they are still under warranty. The work is expected to start in the fall. The mayor doesn't expect the work to delay drivers, it only takes about 15 minutes to install a new meter.
