CORTLANDVILLE -- The wife of a jailed college professor has been accused of helping her husband cover up evidence in a rape case.
The Cortland County District Attorney's Office says 38-year-old Jane DePerno, wife of 39-year-old Daniel DePerno of Cortlandville, has been charged with hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence, and conspiracy in connection with the destruction of evidence relating to the criminal case against her husband. She is accused of destroying computer discs allegedly containing nude photos of an underage girl.
Daniel DePerno was arrested in April and charged with multiple counts of rape and criminal sex acts after police say he had sexual encounters with a girl from 2005-2008, beginning when she was 13 years old. He has pleaded not guilty to a total of 31 charges.
Daniel DePerno is an assistant professor of sports management at SUNY Cortland. He has been placed on administrative leave by the school. The couple has three young children.
Jane DePerno’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 26 in Cortlandville Town Court. Daniel DePerno is currently in jail awaiting trial on the charges against him.
