SYRACUSE -- One of the passengers of a bus which overturned in a fatal accident Wednesday remains hospitalized, according to a statement from police.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office says one adult male, whose name is not being released, is in serious condition at Upstate University Hospital. A bus carrying the patient along with other individuals with various handicaps collided with a car in Cayuga County and overturned Wednesday afternoon. The crash resulted in the death of one elderly woman and injuries to 15 other people.
Sheriff David Gould said Wednesday that a car driven by Robert Lindgren crossed the center line of Route 34 near Glanville Road in Fleming, 25 miles southwest of Syracuse. Police say Lindgren also remains hospitalized at University Hospital and is listed in fair condition.
The Cayuga/Seneca ARC bus was carrying 15 people, including the driver and an aide. The passengers had various disabilities, and some used wheelchairs. The bus veered off of the road and landed in a large ditch nearby.
Gould credits the quick response and teamwork of rescue crews for minimizing injuries, saying "They took a lot of triage, they were triaged right at the scene by EMTs from different fire departments and Auburn Fire Department and sent to different places." He added "Just the cooperation and the quick response I'm sure had a lot to do with saving lives in this case."
Deputies say an investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information pertaining to the crash is asked to call the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office at 315-253-1610.
