ROME -- A Rome police officer is being honored. In May, Officer Donald Moore was off-duty when shot and killed a gunman at an AT&T store in New York Mills.

Police say 79-year-old Abraham Dickan had a list of six employees, who he allegedly wanted to kill. Dickan shot and wounded one worker before Officer Moore shot and killed him.

Wednesday night, Officer Moore was given the key to the City of Rome. Mayor Jim Brown presented the award to him for his bravery, heroism and his dedication to duty and public service.

"It was a miracle that Officer Moore was there that day at the AT&T store," said Brown. "If it wasn't for Officer Moore and his training, and his quick response, probably 6 people could have lost their lives."

Moore is only the third person to receive the key to the city. He's been a Rome police officer for three years, and has been honored before, for saving a child from a river.
