BUFFALO, NY (AP) -- The Seneca Nation of Indians has donated $10,000 to pay for travel expenses and hailed the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team for refusing to travel to England on non-Native passports.
Seneca president Barry Snyder Sr. credited the players for "standing their ground" when they refused U.S. or Canadian passports. He presented them with a check on Thursday at the Empire State Games in Buffalo.
The money will help pay expenses incurred when the team was forced to stay in New York for two days last week while seeking entry into England to compete at the World Lacrosse Championships being held in Manchester.
The team was eventually prevented from traveling when British officials refused to recognize their passports issued by the Iroquois Confederacy.
