Earlier:
One of the two armed men involved in yesterday's bank robbery in Rome was arraigned this morning.
Ikiko K. Brown, 24, of Utica plead not guilty to one count of robbery in the first degree in Rome City Court. Bail was set at $250,000.
Police say Ikiko Brown and Brian J.Brown entered the NBT bank branch on Black River Boulevard at 9:34 am yesterday. Witnesses tell police one of the suspects fired a shot from a semi-automatic handgun into the the bank's ceiling and demanded money, then took off with cash.
After a 15-mile chase down Route 49 in the Town of Marcy, police were able to capture Ikiko Brown. But that's when things took a turn for the worse. As he was being taken into custody, police say Brian Brown moved into the drivers seat of the car and took off down Edic Road. The nearby SUNY IT campus was put on lockdown and neighbors and businesses in the area were put on alert.
A short time later, investigators say, Brian Brown tried to take off on foot, exchanging gunfire with Oneida County Sheriff's deputy Michael Burger. Deputy Burger was wounded in the ankle. He is recovering and is expected to be okay.
At this hour, Brian Brown is still at large. Police continue to search the wooded area near the SUNY IT campus on Edic and Mulaney Roads. The campus remains closed today. Authorities say Brown should be considered armed and dangerous.
