SYRACUSE -- How safe are the bridges you drive on?
Sunday marked three years since the Interstate Highway 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 13 people died in the accident. The bridge reopened in 2008 equipped with new technology to help avoid another deadly disaster.
Could a disaster like the one in Minneapolis happen in Syracuse?
The U.S. Committee on Transportation cites hundreds of structurally deficient bridges across the country, including many here in Central New York. You can view the entire list, state by state, here.
The committee organizes each state by its congressional districts. The 25th Congressional District alone has 11 bridges deemed structurally deficient. A majority of the bridges are on major highways.
