ENDICOTT, NY (AP) -- Santa's little helpers won't be chucking candy to children anymore during an upstate New York village's annual holiday parade.

Village trustees in Endicott, near Binghamton, have prohibited anyone from tossing candy or trinkets during parades. The ban starts with the local high school's homecoming parade in October and includes the holiday parade, which features Santa Claus riding a float while his elves throw goodies to children lining the streets.

Officials say the candy-tossing ban is meant to prevent kids from rushing into the street and getting hit by floats or other vehicles.

Marchers will be allowed to hand out candy to onlookers along the parade route.

The ban was added to parade permits this week.
