Some in Sherrill were saddened when they heard about the death of the man called the "Craigslist Killer."

Philip Markoff was found unresponsive in his jail cell this morning in Boston. Police say the death appears to be a suicide.

Markoff grew up in the city of Sherrill and graduated from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School in 2004. From there he attended SUNY Albany and eventually enrolled in the Boston University School of Medicine.

Sherrill residents were surprised to hear the news. Diane Philo says despite the crimes Markoff was accused of committing, his death is still sad news.

"The events that happened that involved him are tragic for everyone. But it's never a good thing when someone dies in that manner."

Markoff was scheduled to stand trial in March for the shooting death of Julissa Brisman from New York City.

Now that the trial will not take place, one Sherrill resident thinks the healing process can begin for some. Matt Loucy says,

"I would say it lets people move on, but that's obviously in the eye of the beholder."
