SYRACUSE -- Mary Nelson says she is expecting more than 13,000 children for her Ninth Annual Youth Day Barbecue on Saturday. If you can volunteer from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. organizers are looking for you.  The picnic will be held at the intersection of Wood Avenue and Salina Street.

The annual give-away provides kids with backpacks, school supplies and books.  Nelson says the need is great every year but ,especially this year with so many families in need. I have provided a link for you to sign up and get involved. If you can help click here.

The distribution is for all grade levels from pre-K to college.  Nelson started the barbecue nine years ago to curb violence in the city and encourage kids to stay in school.
