22 miles long at a depth of 3600 feet
A National Geographic article explains that much of the oil that was spilled is not being degraded by oil-eating bacteria.
Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) made the discovery after a 10 day research cruise in June. They used unmanned underwater vehicles to gather important research data. They found that a 22 mile long, 650 foot high pocket of oil has remained unchanged at a depth of 3600 feet.
This article goes on to explain that this was a snapshot back in June and that the oil plume may or may not have spread out, thinned out, and/or changed in structure.
