One deluge, one long dry period
Everyone remembers this past Sunday, August 22nd, with respect to the weather in one word: Rain. There was so much rain that many areas received flooding. Did you receive any water in your basement? Was your street flooded? Tell me your story on the comment section at the bottom of this web page.
Syracuse Hancock Airport received record rainfall for that date and for the most rainfall in any one day in August on record since 1950 (4.21”). Most of the immediate Central New York area got crushed with excessive rainfall. Here are some totals from that date. Note the bolded amounts (especially in Onondaga and Oneida counties) where the heaviest rain fell with 4.00 to 6.24” of storm total rainfall.

With that whopper of rainfall, much of our area will end up with above normal monthly August rainfall numbers. In Syracuse, our total for August is 6.36”. That puts us in 5th place all time since 1903. Here are the top 5:
WETTEST AUGUSTS
8.41” – 1956
7.26” – 1943
7.19” – 1954
6.73” – 1976
6.36” – 2010
3.17” – Average August Since 1903
An interesting note is that without August 22, our rainfall for August would be below average. Looking forward, it appears unlikely that Syracuse or any part of central New York will see any rain at all. Therefore, it will be dry all the way through the end of the month. Assuming that occurs, we would have 11 days where measurable rain was recorded, 7 days where only a trace of rain was recorded, and 13 days where zero rainfall was observed. You could see that August has been all over the place, with dry stretches, some small rainfalls, and one mega rainfall.
Since dry weather is in the forecast through the middle of the week and through September first, you will want to take advantage of outdoor activities including the Great New York State Fairgrounds. With summery warmth and dry weather in the forecast, it will be nearly perfect outdoors. Enjoy the favorable weather, as you know it will not last for much longer.
