The Great New York State Fair is attracting money-conscious crowds with lots of free activities this year. And vendors are hoping that foot traffic leads to a boost in business.
So far, some vendors say sales are off to a slow start. Booths line the room, showing off to shoppers and hoping to sink a sale. "It's been slow actually, it seems like there are a lot of people but doesn't seem like as many buyers," said Sandra Duquette.
"I think a lot of people are going to be looking this year and really watching what they buy, I really think discretionary spending is still down," said Kathleen DePasquale.
While many shoppers are sticking to a budget, many vendors are offering special deals for families trying to conserve cash.
Which may be the reason why Morgan's fudge, can't make the fudge fast enough. "I think we're up this year, I don't know how much but it's better than it's been," said Robert Morgan.
The owner says the more you buy, the bigger the discount, which draws in families stretching their buck.
A similar special is being offered at the Drop Popz booth. Buying one toy is $6, but for $20, you can get 5.
"Families are on a budget, we've done some pretty good business," said Jason Dyke.
And since the fair comes just once a year, for some, it's the time to splurge.
"We usually come at least twice, if not 3 times a year. We're long time fairgoers, but it's a good $100 day, easy. We spend a lot of money at the fair," said Lillian Costello.
If you aren't looking to shell out more cash, the fair on a budget page on the NYS fair website is a great resource for finding good deals.
