Park support group looking to grow
Schiller Park, on Syracuse's north side, is getting a makeover and new vitality, thanks to a citizen support group.
The development plan includes trimming back the big trees on the park roundtop. Nick DeMartino, part of the Friends group, remembers when you could get a panoramic view of the city from the roundtop. He'd also like to see help for some of the historic oaks that are being crowded out.
Other plans include creating a signed walking trail that would become a cross-country ski trail in winter months.
The park friends group has a membership/fundraiser dinner planned for October 2nd, 6 - 9pm at the Schiller Park Bova Center. For information you can email njdemartino@hotmail.com
"We cannot expect municipalities to do it all" says DeMartino, we need to partner with private industry. SUNY ESF is also helping, with incoming students working on trimming the park's extensive greenery on Saturday.
