Info, how-to on tax credits
GEDDES -- Walk through the Center of Progress Building, and you'll see lots of fairgoers carrying, or wearing, bright yellow sacks with the college savings plan logo.
John Heywood, who works for the company that administers New York's 529 plan, says they'll give out 20,000 of the bags in the fair's run. And, more importantly, they expect to add significantly to the number of people siging up for the college savings plan.
The 529 can be started by opening an account for as little as $25. Parents, grandparents or other relatives can be the account owner, and can get income tax deductions for the savings, and then can use it to pay college tuition to anywhere in the country.
