Hunting for fossils
GEDDES -- A pile of rocks in front of the State Fair Youth Building has become one of the most popular exhibits on the grounds. The shale --- from the Ithaca area---is trucked in by Ithaca's Museum of the Earth, and is rich in fossils from 350- to 400 million years ago.
Amateur paleontologists can use brushes and magnifying glasses in their fossil hunts, but most just crack open the rocks and search by hand.
Trilobites, Crinoids, Ammonoids and other prehistoric creatures are being found, preserved in the rock.
If you miss the dig at the fair, you can try your hand at the Museum, in Ithaca, year round.
