The polls are closed across Central New York.  Early returns show Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino with a lead over former congressman Rick Lazio with only a small percentage of precincts reporting.

The 23rd Congressional District republican primary between Matt Doheny and Doug Hoffman shows Hoffman with an early lead.  We are also watching Assembly and Senate primaries.   The 119th Assembly district has a democratic primary between Phil Latessa, Jane Fahey-Suddaby and Sam Roberts.  The 49th Senate District has republicans Danny Liedka and Andrew Russo hoping for primary night victories for the right to challenge democrat Dave Valesky on November 2nd.

This has been the first year of widespread use of the new optical scan voting machines. They are taking the place of the traditional lever machines.

Anchors Matt Mulcahy, Lisa Spitz and CBS 5's Michael Benny talk about tonight's results and the idea of opening primaries to all voters on the Talk@10 on the 10:00 News on CW 6.
