Thornden Park garden has national status
SYRACUSE --
Syracuse's E M Mills Rose Garden may be a local treasure, but now it's getting national recognition, too.
Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner presented the Syracuse Rose Society with a proclamation this morning, honoring the volunteers for their 99 years of work. The E.M. Mills Garden, in Thornden Park, is now recognized by the American Rose Society as the second best rose garden in the country.
The Syracuse Rose Society and Syracuse Parks jointly maintain the garden, which includes new rose varieties on trial, that are then named and sold commercially, if they pass their quality tests here.
And, next year will be even bigger for the local garden, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary by hosting the national Miniature Rose Convention, in June 2011.
