ALBANY (AP) -- The state transportation department plans to temporarily close six highway rest areas this fall to save money--including one in Oswego County.
The closures will include rest stops on interstates 81, 87, 88 and 90. Closures will begin Nov. 1. No Thruway travel plazas are affected.
The DOT says the rest stops to be closed are among the oldest and smallest in the state. The agency maintains 32 other facilities across the state.
The money saved by these closures and the June closure of the Schroon Lake rest area southbound on I-87, will total about $490,000 during fiscal year 2010/2011 and $1.1 million in subsequent fiscal years.
Closures include:
-Brewerton/Hastings on I-81 southbound between exits 31 and 32.
-Schodack on I-90 westbound between exits 11 and 12.
-Lewis on I-87 southbound in Essex County between exits 31 and 32.
-Schroon Lake northbound on I-87 between exits 27 and 28.
-Worcester on I-88 eastbound between exists 18 and 19 near Oneonta.
-Wells Bridge on I-88 westbound between exits 11 and 12.
