SYRACUSE -- Do you ever wonder what happens to the stuff that goes down the drain? Well today neighbors gathered at the Metropolitan Syracuse Waste Treatment plant for an open house. You've probably passed the facility many times, its on the southern edge of Onondaga Lake on Hiawatha Boulevard near Carousel Center.
The facility processes an average of 65 million gallons of sewage a day. In recent years the county has invested $163.2 million to improve the facility's capacity and treatment process. The county's Water Environmental Protection department says since an advanced phosphorous treatment has substantially reduced phosphorus output into the lake, reducing the number of algae blooms.
County Executive Joanne Mahoney was there to promote the county's "Save the Rain" campaign, which promotes the use of green infrastructure to capture rainwater before it enters public sewer systems
