SYRACUSE -- This week's My School takes us to Henninger High School, where student-athletes are taking extra steps to make sure they're in good academic standing - and they're having fun in the process.
"The Varsity Club" takes place during the last block of the school day, and as Athletic Director Ari Liberman puts it it's a place especially for athletes to get their schoolwork done, maybe watch game film, talk with coaches, and get a bite to eat on campus before games and practice. This is especially important because the students are on campus, together, supervised by their coaches rather than on the streets or at parks.
The students involve rave about the club and when we stopped by, there was a wide range of kids doing homework and going over strategies. Students were having so much fun, and were all learning great lessons and improving as student-athletes on the field and in the classroom.
Clearly the Varsity Club is a step ahead, and no doubt it will fully benefit everyone involved.
