OSWEGO -- A large group of fishermen required rescue from the Oswego River, only days after rising water swept away four people, killing one.

17 people were stranded on Leto Island in Oswego Thursday afternoon. Oswego Fire Chief Jeff McCrobie told CNY Central that falling rain raised the river's height. People fishing in the area were caught off guard and ended up becoming trapped on the island.

A fire department rescue boat transported everyone to shore.

This comes just two days after a deadly accident on the river. On Tuesday, four people were rescued after getting caught in rising water from the Varick Street dam. One of the victims did not survive.

McCrobie reminds fishermen and boaters that they should be using personal flotation devices (lifejackets) while fishing.

Police are investigating the timing of flood alarms at the dam.
