ROCHESTER (AP) -- Researchers at the University of Rochester are looking for volunteers to test a new vaccine against norovirus, which causes the common 24-hour stomach bug.
There's currently no vaccine against the virus, but one is being developed by LigoCyte Pharmaceuticals of Bozeman, Montana. Dr. John Treanor at the University of Rochester Medical Center is enlisting volunteers for a clinical study of whether the shot will produce a safe and effective immune response.
According to LigoCyte Pharmaceuticals, noroviruses afflict 23 million Americans annually. Epidemic outbreaks are common in community environments such as schools, nursing homes, daycare centers and cruise ships.
If the vaccine turns out to be effective, it will still be a number of years before it's available to the public.
