NORTH SYRACUSE -- Onondaga County and state health officials are investigating several illnesses linked to Hinerwadel's Grove Clambake Facility. At least seven people got sick with Campylobacter, a bacterial infection, after eating at Hinerwadel's on September 15. Camplyobacter can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.

The incubation period for this infection is usually two to five days, but it can be as long as ten days. Symptoms can last for up to two weeks. Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County Health Commissioner, expects more sick people to come forward.

She is asking anyone who ate at Hinerwadel's on or after September 15 and who got sick to contact the Health Department at (315) 435-6607. If gastrointestinal symptoms persist, contact your doctor.

Health officials are still trying to determine the source of the infection. Right now, there is no indication of improper food handling practice at the facility.

This isn't the first time people have gotten sick at Hinerwadel's. Back in September of 2008, as many as 160 people got sick from eating a batch of bad clams there.
