'Emergency' forms need to be filed by the 15th
The Internal Revenue Service says thousands of not for profits, from American Legions to pet rescue groups to labor unions, will lose their tax exempt status on October 15th because they have not filed required returns for the past three years.
For New York state alone, the printout of those at risk organizations runs hundreds of pages.
The IRS says it's granting a one-time amnesty if they file Form 990-N, a postcard form, downloadable from the IRS website, but it must be done by Friday, or the 501c-3 status will be revoked.
