ALBANY (AP) -- Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the New York State Board of Elections to give overseas voters 10 more days to return their ballots because four upstate counties and New York City mailed the ballots out late.
Schumer made the request Wednesday. A day earlier, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the Board of Elections, trying to guarantee that ballots sent out late to military personnel and other Americans overseas are counted in the Nov. 2 election.
New York already plans to count ballots received up to 13 days after November 2. If the state agrees to Schumer's request, that would be extended to 23 days.
A spokesman for the Board of Elections didn't immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
