SYRACUSE -- We're paying more for gas these days, at least compared to last year. The national average currently sits at $2.83 for a gallon of regular. That's according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
After climbing for the last two weeks, prices at the pump are about 26 cents higher than they were a year ago. According to Gas Buddy, the cheapest price in the Syracuse area is $2.88 a gallon at the Delta Sonic on Brewerton Road in North Syracuse.

If you think we have it the worst here in New York, think again. Out west, drivers pay the most for gas. The most expensive place to fuel up is in San Francisco, California, where gas costs around $3 a gallon. Want to find the lowest prices in the country? Look no further than the Gulf Coast states. The cheapest is in Houston, Texas, where prices sit around $2.68 a gallon. The average here in New York sits somewhere in between at $2.86 a gallon.
What's behind the spike in prices at the pump? Look no further than oil prices, pushed up by a weakening U.S. dollar.
